“Genesis should be here any minute. She’s with the new girl brought in last night.”

I smile warmly at the woman who shows me into Genesis’s office, although this hardly looks like an office and more like a Wild West conference room. The same western cabin feel that decorates the rest of the main ranch house gets repeated here, except there’s a large conference table instead of a desk and photos adorning the wall of Genesis with who I guess are women she rescued or worked with. There are a few with different Native American women in traditional costume, but when I look closer, it seems it’s the same woman with Genesis over various years.

Even the younger version of Genesis doesn’t differ much from what she looks like now. Of course, she has more wrinkles and greyer hair, but her style hasn’t changed. Wild curly hair, weathered skin, and those typical cowboy boots, denim shirts with elaborate bone snap buttons, and loose, roomy cotton dresses in all shades of the sunset. The woman never deviated from her style over the decades.

"Wall of years gone by.”

I turn to find the very woman standing in the flesh before me, older and maybe even slightly heavier. I wouldn’t know, she wears a lot of baggy clothes.

“How long has this sanctuary existed?” I curiously ask Genesis.

I spent the entire week intentionally steering clear of her, aware that our last encounter resulted in nothing positive. Grateful that this ranch is big enough to act as a buffer, sparing us the need to further deal with each other.

“Thirty years,” she pouts her lips with pride. “It slowly expanded with external funds from private supporters.”

She studies me intently before gesturing towards a seat at the lengthy table.

“Sit, Raven,” she instructs. “You requested to see me. Now that Archer is back, I imagine you have questions, and I won’t sugarcoat my answers.”

Her directness is sharp, yet her expression betrays a hint of anguish, almost a softened edge to her demeanor. Reluctantly, I comply, drawn to the necessity of unraveling the mysteries surrounding my father, her connection to my mother, and how the hell she got a tip on me being targeted halfway across the globe.

With an echoing creak, I pull out the heavy wooden armchair and settle into it.

“How do you know me and my family?” I ask, wasting no time either. I need answers.

“I don’t know you personally, Raven. But I know you were born Revna Kingstone, and your mother was Sable Kingstone, and you had an old brother, Sten.”

“How did you know my mother? What relation were you to her?”

She hesitates a moment.

“Sable used to be Thornton before she married your father.”

Her maiden name. I press my lips together in frustration, struggling to contain my impatience.

“You haven’t told me how you know her.”

“I used to be a Thornton.”

“Were you related to Grandpa Bo?”

“I was Beaufort Thornton’s wife. You know him as Grandpa Bo.”

I purse my lips together once more. This woman is going to string me along with bullshit.
