After I hung up the phone, I was drained. Exhausted. I couldnât even get up. I stretched out under the stars, where the sand was still warm, but I tried not to sleep. If I slept, I knew Skye would show me more of her past, and I didnât want to see any more. I wanted it all to go away, to leave my mind altogether.
But soon my eyes blinked shut, blocking out the stars.
The next dream came.
I was in Andrewâs lab. It was Christmastime.
I lay in a leather chair, with no sound around me but the hum of white noise. I wore a mesh cap that fit snugly over my skull, lined with a dense web of wires and electrodes. The red wires traveled down my body and joined at a cable that was connected to a computer.
Andrew typed rapidly, then came over to me and made adjustments on the electrodes. I could see electrical pathways streaming across his computer screen at a pace that was impossible to follow.
âAre those my brain waves on the screen?â
âThatâs right.â
âSo how will this work?â I asked.
âWell, for you, itâs very easy. Iâll start the recording process, and Iâll leave the room so as not to distract you. The key is to focus on individual memories in as much detail as possible. Try to start at the beginning of an event, and work your way through it chronologically.â
I stared at the screen again with anxious wonder. There was my life, distilled into a seemingly infinite number of pulses and waves. All the places Iâd been, the people Iâd loved.
The things Iâd done.
Somewhere in there was a few minutes on the cliff that Iâd forgotten.
âWhat if I donât remember something?â I asked. âWhat if there are gaps in my memory? Will it . . . fill them in?â
I hesitated, waiting to see what he said.
Andrew gave me a curious look. âThe truth is, I donât know. Eventually, the idea is to pull the memories, not push them. As we perfect the technique, hopefully weâll be able to isolate thoughts and experiences that youâve long since forgotten. But for now, the computer isnât really in charge. You are, Hallie. Your brain will feed data to us. Some of it may be conscious, and some of it may be unconscious.â
Wait, what did he call me?
âDoes it matter what I think about?â
âNo, but the more vivid the memories are, the better.â
âI had dinner with Tyler last week. I told him about wanting a divorce. God knows that was vivid.â
Andrew stared at me. âItâs better not to tell me what youâre remembering. It could bias the results when we try to interpret what weâve stored. Besides, what happens between you and Tyler doesnât involve me. Heâs my friend. So are you.â
âI donât love him. I never did. I feel horrible about that, but itâs the truth.â
âHallie, please. Enough.â
Hallie?
âShould they be recent memories? Or from the past?â
âIt doesnât matter. Itâs more important that the memories are powerful.â
I debated whether to tell him the truth.
