A knock on the car window woke me up. The first rays of sunlight peeked above the horizon. I rubbed my eyes and looked around. Who was knocking on the window?

“Yamada-san, wake up.”

“Sayaka?”

I unlocked the doors and she got into the passenger seat. She wrinkled her nose.

“It stinks in here. Did you smoke in the car?”

“Yeah, sorry.”

“Never mind that. Let’s go get the diesel generator from my uncle’s shed.”

“Uhm…wait, did you tell your classmates that you’re here?”

She shook her head. “I snuck out while they were still asleep. Let’s go. I want to get out of Niigata before they wake up.”

“I thought you are going to stay with your classmates.”

Sayaka looked at me. Suddenly fury spread across her face, and I instinctively inched back. It was the first time I felt scared of her ever since she pointed a gun at me. Her wrath basically poured out of her like an active volcano and I was trapped in a confined space with her.

“Are you an idiot?! When did I ever say I wanted to stay with them? Seeing them makes me sick!”

“But…but that Satoshi told me that he is your boyfriend.”

“Did he say that to you last night?” She clicked her tongue with annoyance. “It’s true, we did date at one point, but he left me to fend for myself when I had nowhere to go. I can’t stand looking at him. And he has the audacity to act like I’m his girlfriend. It’s totally disgusting. Just so that we are clear: he is my ex-boyfriend. He is dead to me. I only went along with his behavior last night because otherwise, it would be troublesome since he’s got all the surviving students under his leadership.”

Yikes, that must’ve been one rough breakup.

“And I don’t want to see the rest of them either. When the locals turned against me, all of my classmates refused to help me. My ex-boyfriend refused to let me into his house even when I told him that I had nowhere else to go. All of my classmates slammed their doors shut when I needed help the most. They all sided against me. The locals kicked me out of town, and they abandoned me. They are cowards. I wish they’d all die.”

I suddenly felt a strange sense of relief in my chest.

“Are you sure? They are still your classmates. To be honest…actually, I thought it might be better for you to stay with these guys since you are the same age and — “

“Is it a bother to have me around?” she asked. She looked hurt, her downcast gaze suddenly filled with uncertainty. And then in a whisper, she said, “You don’t want to travel with me?”

“Of course I want to travel with you. I just thought it might be annoying for you to travel with an old man like me.”

“You are not that much older than me, and besides, you look young for your age.”

Her expression was resolute.

“As long as you are sure,” I said. “Are there any friends you want to take with you? The journey might be more fun with a few more people.
