CHAPTER 21

Spook’s throat was so dry that when she went to speak, the words came out rough and scratchy. “Sorry… I was just… I couldn’t sleep, so I came looking for some more information. But you knew I was coming. You replied to my message.”

Fiona, who was pressing her long fingers to her chest, swallowed and shot her a stiff smile. “Yes, but I thought in the daytime. Office hours. You are sneaking around with the lights off as if you’re robbing us.”

Spook stared at her. “I didn’t want to alert anyone to my presence. We still don’t know the reasons behind your father’s disappearance. And Aci—” She coughed. “Alice and I wanted to keep a low profile until we had more to go on…” She trailed off before she said too much. The last thing she wanted was to add to Fiona’s worries.

“Did you find anything?”

“Umm… I’m not sure.” She didn’t want to tell her about the passwords. Not yet. This was her treasure, her piece of the puzzle. She smiled and raised her head, trying to sound breezy. “But what about you? What are you doing here so late?”

Fiona huffed out a breath but appeared to relax. She shut the door and pulled out one of the two chairs in front of the desk. “I couldn’t sleep,” she said, sitting and throwing one leg over the other. She reached into the pocket of her overcoat and pulled out a crumpled packet of cigarettes. “You want one?” she asked, offering the open pack to Spook.

“No. Thank you.”

She watched as Fiona twisted a slim, all-white cigarette between her dark maroon lips and lit the tip with a gold lighter. Closing her eyes, she inhaled deeply before releasing a large plume of smoke into the room. Spook watched the cloud rise and dissipate before a loud sniff from Fiona captured her attention.

“I’ve hardly slept since my father went missing,” she said. “The last few nights I’ve tossed and turned and put on meditation tapes, but tonight I decided to go for a drive. I was driving nearby and all at once a thought came to me. My mother’s birthday. The twenty-second of February, nineteen-fifty-five. Twenty-two, zero two, fifty-five.” She took another sharp drag and waved the cigarette at the safe. “I don’t know why I haven’t tried it before.”

Spook grinned. With her interest piqued, it was easier to concentrate on the job at hand rather than her pounding heart. “Great, well let’s see, shall we?” She walked over to the safe. “You want me to go for it?”

Fiona nodded. “Yes. Do it.”

She repeated the numbers slowly and Spook tapped them in. Nothing happened.

“Did you press the star key?”

She hadn’t. But when she did, the safe made a beeping sound and she felt the air pressure on the door give way. Turning the handle, she felt something click and had to dampen a squeal of excitement as she pulled the door open.

“Yes! It worked.” She was about to reach inside when Fiona got to her feet.
