THIRTY-SEVEN

PARKER

FOUR WEEKS EARLIER

Parker drove out of the squash club and turned left, taking the long route home instead of following Luna in her Mazda.

Despite his kneejerk reaction to tell her the truth, he couldn’t face her yet. Driving home was the only thinking time he had available before she’d try to force him to deny or admit her allegations. The thought of having to come clean at last seemed less palatable with each second that passed.

Was it ever a good idea to lay yourself bare, warts and all? He thought not. When Luna had turned up at the squash club car park, he’d felt the time for lying and cheating had come to an end. But now, the familiar feeling that he could get himself out of any tight spot was returning with a vengeance. What was he thinking of, confessing all? He could solve his problems. He just needed a little more time.

Parker had always been a good judge of people. He had the useful ability to weigh them up within a couple of minutes or even less. It was a skill that had helped make him an excellent salesman. His understanding of Luna went far deeper than she knew and despite her bravado, he knew that if she had all the answers, if she knew everything there was to know, she would never have stood there calmly demanding they talk at home.

On the contrary, she’d have had him by the balls the second he’d exited the squash club with Kenny. He’d been on the end of her psycho side before when she’d got into her head he was up to something. No. Bank statement comment or not, she was bluffing. She knew some stuff but not everything. She was trying to make him believe she had the whole pie.

Still, when he thought about how all this had started and the speed with which it had escalated, it was enough to make him blurt everything out in one go just to relieve the weight on his shoulders. At least he’d felt that way when Luna put him on the spot in the car park.

Now his head had cleared, he realised the best thing he could do for his family was to calm down and think logically. Think strategically for the future, not just react to the panic of today.

He would use the ten minutes remaining in his journey home to think over the last few weeks and devise a plan that would finally get him out of this mess.

Whatever it took and no matter how unpleasant, he was prepared to do it. He’d proven that to himself before.
