Bodies matter in Godâs call and how we respond, Mercer stresses.17
When my children are sick or when I am in pain, Iâd much rather respond to Godâs call in a way that transcends the body. In these instances, when I have been up multiple times in the night and can barely keep my eyes open to write down thoughts on a page, the bodyâs weaknesses seem like an unnecessary liability; they keep me from the work I want to do. I take Weedsâs âowiesâ as a nuisance, a distraction from the real task at hand.
But then, by Godâs grace, I occasionally experience little pockets of a deeper reality. As Weeds quiets down and sucks his thumb, using his other hand to trace the edge of my fingernails over and over (one of those quirky self-soothing tools that all babies develop), I sink into a lull where nothing else matters but being with him, our bodies touching, knowing that my physical presence is a comfort to him, and his to me. He needs me, and I need him. And that is okay. It is good. The fact that I can meet him in his pain and vulnerability is what makes me human. It also teaches him what being human is all about. Weeds is learning, I hope, that it is okay to express his pain to others, okay to ask for help. He is practicing how to relate to God and others in the inevitable suffering he will experience throughout his life.
