CHAPTER SEVEN

“PRINCESS! PRINCESS!”

It was weird to hear the title called out. The first time she’d heard it, Brie had nearly cried. Every other time, she’d used it as her focal point to make sure she kept her ideas on point. Today, though...today it felt different.

Her gaze flitted to Alessio, clearly getting into his role of dutiful heir to the throne. She understood now the reason the rebel returned the ever-dutiful heir to the throne. It was tragic.

But knowing it made her feel closer to the man beside her.

“Princess! Princess!” They were calling out for her. It should make her nervous. It always had before. That title symbolized the loss of everything she’d gained.

But it also meant Alessio. What if she could work and be a princess? What if the connection she’d believed was just the aftereffects of the lottery high was real? What if he was her match?

No. No. She wasn’t traveling that path. This was a show. And they were getting far too good at the optics. That was all.

That didn’t explain the pool or the meals they shared. No one was watching them then.

“So many people. I still have a hard time believing they’re showing up.”

“Everyone believes we’re prepping for the wedding of the century, Brie. Trying on gowns—that’s a can’t-miss event. Our union is a big deal today. Tomorrow, we focus on some other tourist location.” He held up his hands. “I know you sent me the schedule. I think it’s an art gallery.”

It was. And she knew he was playing with her. Alessio knew their schedule down to the minute.

“Right.” It was the only word her tongue seemed capable of forming.

Our union.

Why had those words felt so right to hear, even when he was joking? This wasn’t the life she’d planned for...the life she’d fought for.

If she turned her head, the flashing lights she could see in her periphery were all the reminder she needed. This life was the opposite of freedom.

Alessio would look delectable in a wedding suit. A wedding suit he’d wear when he pledged his heart to another.

Her heart raced and her stomach turned. He’d meet another at the altar, maybe in Scotland. Someone he chose, hopefully. And she’d be working in her downtown office, proving to her parents and everyone else that she didn’t need them to accomplish her dreams.

Each was getting what they wanted...

There was no need for jealousy. This was a show. A role-play. A marketing campaign for the best Celiana offered. Nothing more.

Morning coffee...and kisses.

And why wasn’t he saying anything! He was just staring at her, his deep green eyes holding hers.

Lifting a hand, he caressed her cheek. “You all right? You look as though you’ve seen a ghost.”

Tiny bolts of electricity slipped along her skin. His mouth was so close to hers. They needed to pull apart, to get the show started. But she couldn’t make herself move.

“Fine.” Her voice quavered, and her breath seemed caught in her throat. “Just having a think on the agenda.”

“Your brain is always spinning with ideas.
