A WIN FOR EVERYONE

Alfred Nobel wrote in his will: “It is my express wish that in awarding the prizes no consideration be given to the nationality of the candidates, but that the most worthy shall receive the prize, whether he be Scandinavian or not.” Very few women could be scientists back in 1895 so, although Nobel could imagine a scientist that wasn’t Scandinavian, it probably didn’t occur to him that ‘he’ could actually be a ‘she’.

More than 100 years later, Tu Youyou became one of just eighteen female Nobel Prize winners in science. This was a huge achievement, especially as she was also the first Chinese scientist to win for medicine and the first Chinese woman to ever win a Nobel Prize.
