On her way back to the firepit and Duncan, Eve stopped at her tent. She withdrew the small bottle of whiskey that she had been saving. Now that they had spent a solid twenty-four hours together, she figured a little lubricant would help get them started, and ease her lingering anxiety.
The thing was, all day long, she had caught him looking at her. And not just glancing over to make sure she didnât need any help, but really looking, with admiration and lust blazing in those dark depths of his eyes.
She wanted Duncan, more than she had ever wanted another man before. The time was right. It felt right to give in to the need she couldnât seem to escape anytime he was near.
With a deep, calming breath, she left the tent and headed to her seat beside him on the log. She sat, and showed him the bottle in her hands. âI figured it was a good time to break this out.â
He chuckled, with a lopsided grin on his face. âYou are chock full of surprises. No girly drinks for you.â
âOh, I like cocktails, the girlier the better, but that doesnât mean I canât appreciate a good whiskey or scotch. Iâve tried this one before. Itâs from a distillery in Colorado, Meath Irish Distillery.â She uncapped the bottle, took a swig, and handed it to him.
The amber liquid burned smoothly as it traveled into her belly. The liquor warmed her from the inside out, while the fire and Duncanâs closeness warmed the outside.
âWhat was it like, being a SEAL?â She took the bottle back and stared at him over the rim before she drank another long dram of the alcohol.
Duncan studied her. The firelight cast a golden glow on his features as night darkened.
âIf you donât want toââ
âItâs not that. I just normally donât talk about my time in the Navy. Not that Iâm ashamed by it⦠itâs more that everything I did, that I experienced, can be difficult to understand if youâve not been in it.â
âTry.â She passed him back the bottle.
He took a long drink, pegged her with an intense stare, and said, âI entered the Navy directly out of high school. My dad was a Naval officer. I knew by the time I was thirteen that I would be following him into the service. But I didnât want to be an officer. I wanted to be in the thick of the fighting, which is why I decided to try for the SEALs. Itâs brutal training, pushes you so far past your comfort limits, it eradicates them completely. Itâs taxing physically, mentally, and emotionally.â
âYou sound like you loved it.â Taking the proffered bottle, she took another swig before handing it back.
âI did. Iâve always been a bit of an adrenaline junkie. Being a SEAL fulfilled that side of me better than anything else I had tried. Itâs dangerous work. I canât tell you how many tight spots my unit and I found ourselves in.â
âToo many to remember?â
He shook his head.
