Ryder’s phone rang mere minutes after Alex left to say goodbye to her parents. It was Daniel. “Dammit,” he mumbled to himself. He impulsively rushed over to his suitcase and grabbed a pair of jeans to put on before he answered. As if Daniel might know from a phone call that Ryder was naked because he’d slept with Alex. “Hey. What’s up?” Ryder answered, a bit breathless.

“I’m dying to know what happened with Geoffrey last night. Plus I’m on London time. Sorry if it’s too early or you’re hung over or something.”

Ryder plopped back down on the bed. “Nope. You’re good. You’ll be happy to know that things with Geoffrey went so much better than I think we could have expected. Alex and I sat with him and his wife during the wedding, then we sat together for the reception, too, all because Alex moved around the seating chart.”

“That’s such great news. I can’t believe you didn’t text me right after.”

Oh, crap. Delivering an update to Daniel, even a brief one, had not been on Ryder’s mind. He’d been far too preoccupied with Alex. “Yeah. Sorry about that. I was wiped out.”

“Seems a little weird, but okay.”

“Why would you say that?”

“Because you’re just as focused on this as I am. And a meeting with Geoffrey Burnett is an absolute coup.”

“Well, we don’t have an actual meeting set yet. We’re going to talk soon. I’m guessing Tuesday. I have his direct number now, though. He said he wants to get together.”

“I thought you said it went better than expected. That doesn’t sound like better than expected.”

“I don’t think you understand how much quality time I spent with him. Social time. Hours. I don’t think I’ve ever spent that much purely social time with a client.” Ryder was still marveling at everything Alex had done. She deserved some serious props when it came to yesterday. “And by the way, we owe a serious debt of gratitude to your sister. She was a rock star. I hardly had to sell the idea of Gold and Carson to him at all. She sat there and rattled off the details of every major project we’ve done over the last twenty-four months. It was incredible.”

“Why did you let Alex do the talking?”

“Because it just happened that way. And it felt right. Nothing was forced. No heavy sales pitch. I think Geoffrey sincerely appreciated that. And let’s be honest, a wedding isn’t really the right place to cut a business deal. Chloe and Parker had just had the most important day of their lives. We needed to do some celebrating. It couldn’t all be about work.”

“Are you feeling okay?”

“Yes. Why would you ask me that?”

“You just don’t sound like yourself. I really thought you’d go in for the kill when you were with Geoffrey. That’s what you usually do. Get in there and sell it. Sell us.”

Ryder wasn’t sure how to respond to that. Daniel wasn’t entirely off base with his accusation. Normally, Ryder was laser focused on getting what he wanted, which was almost always work related.
