Body-Repair Theory

Sleep is a time for rejuvenation and repair. The third theory is that sleep allows our bodies to repair themselves. In effect, sleep lets us recharge our batteries for our next endeavor. Remember those countless times your mom told you something like “Rest up, tomorrow’s a big day?” This is the theory she had in mind. Indeed, our body loses immune functions without sleep, leaving us more susceptible to stress. Without sleep, our metabolism doesn’t work as well either, and we are at risk of injury due to extreme lack of focus. It’s unclear whether sleep deprivation alone can kill you directly, but it is undisputed that it weakens your body and puts you at a much greater risk of sickness and injury. Sleeping regularly, however, enables muscle growth, tissue repair, protein synthesis, the release of growth hormones, and the facilitation of metabolic and hormonal processes.
