TWENTY-THREE

Lukas hit the accelerator and plunged the cycle into the lightless tunnel. Though he couldn’t see him, he knew August couldn’t be too far ahead. He reached inside his jacket and pulled out the weapon that felt most effective for the moment—an Emerson CQC-T—a perfectly balanced, razor-sharp steel tomahawk. It would make quick work of carving up his prey.

He drove faster, holding the tomahawk down, angled by his side, ready for action. In his mind, he envisioned a clean swipe through August’s neck, which, if he were lucky, would fully sever his frowning face from his body. Lukas almost laughed at the thought; it was so gruesomely perfect.

In the distance, he saw a taillight flicker alive. He knew August was too deep in the tunnel to go any further without illumination. His disappearing act had ended, and there was nothing left for him to do but die. Lukas kept his own lights off, knowing that the element of surprise would give him a clear advantage. Soon The Gospels of Henry the Lion would be in his hands, and he would be the savior of the Black Vehm.

He dipped his blade down until it skimmed the flesh of the pavement, causing a cascade of sparks that blazed a trail toward his target. He gained ground quickly, almost too fast. Had August stopped in his tracks? It made the whole scenario seem almost sad—the poor defenseless bookworm sitting scared in the dark, awaiting his fate like a man trapped in the craw of a guillotine.

The taillight was only a few yards away when Lukas noticed something curious about its angle. It wasn’t square with the road, but rather slightly tipped off axis. He swore and hit the brakes, but not before August stepped out of the shadows and swung a two-by-four directly at his face. The tomahawk rattled out of his hand as he fell from the bike and landed with a sick thud against the pavement.

The last thing he remembered before the darkness took him was the sound of a bike thundering away into the distance.
