Keep a copy of your list of medications and dosages handy as a reference for yourself, your patient advocate, and others involved in your care.
In an earlier chapter, I advised you to create a list of the drugs you take, the dosages, and the times. In Chapter 6, I suggested you bring that list to the hospital with you. In one of the preceding tips, I said you should check with your doctor post-surgery so your list can be updated to reflect any new drugs youâre taking or to drop any drugs youâve stopped taking now that your problem has been handled surgically. Donât assume, just because youâre in a hospital, that your caregivers will always make sure you get only those medications your doctor ordered.
Errors in dosing and mix-ups of the medications to be given are far more common than they should be in most hospitals. Your best way to protect yourself is to have a written list of everything youâre meant to receive and when. Keep your list where nurses and other hospital staff members can see it at all timesâtaped above your bed, for example. To protect the list from spills, you might even get it laminated.
