The boy paces the short length of his treehouse, his brows furrowed. The fairy hovering at eye level shrinks further into the shadows at the edge of the room. “I should not have waited so long,” the boy murmurs angrily. “They have gotten too far from the island. Unless I can lure them back somehow… No, that will never work.” He has been pacing for hours now, made obvious from the flattened path across the furs. He regrets ever leaving the girl alone in that cave.

The boy stops and lifts his head, his eyes going straight to the fairy. “Fat lot of help you’ve been,” he says.

“What would you have me do?” the fairy asks, cowering away from the strange green gaze. “As you said, they’ve gotten too far. We cannot possibly all make it there and back again, certainly not if you expect us to fight as well, and with no rest.”

The boy considers what the fairy is saying for a few long moments before nodding.

“You may go,” he says, turning away with a dismissive wave of his hand. “I will call on you again when I have come up with a plan.”

But the fairy is already gone, her light swallowed up by the blackness of the night. The boy begins pacing again, thinking over his options. There must be some way to get her off of that ship. A thought tugs at the corner of his mind. What if…
