Clem Roche gazed in deep amaze, speechless.

Chopper Ryan kicked the spare balls on the side-line as high as he could. Parents fist-pumped the air. Young girls did cartwheels. The ref tried not to smile.

It was more than a goal. It was an act of defiance.

Tennant sprinted in celebration towards the corner flag in trademark aeroplane pose. All his teammates, and a few of their younger siblings from the crowd, sprinted after him like fugitives in ecstatic pursuit. After what they had just seen, no one present would have been surprised if they had all taken flight, like ET and the boys on the BMXs. Within seconds, Tennant was engulfed by his pursuers, still wondering if they were dreaming. A human pyramid was formed with Tennant’s aeroplane arms just about visible beneath it.

When Tennant eventually got up, he touched the grass again, blessed himself, and saluted the crowd as he jogged back towards the halfway line. It was, as they said, ‘just like watching Brazil’.
