LANCE TOOK ANOTHER DRAG ON his Lucky, wishing it was grass instead, and waited as Ray spoke on the phone with some loser at Local about getting a guard detail at the agency.
âYeah, Money Shots. Yes, the porn place. Jimmy Bronson. Iâll have photos sent,â Ray was saying.
God damn if Lance was concentrating on the phone call, though. His mind was still on the blonde in the lobby. Lance was a leg man, and that girl had been nothing but. She looked too pretty to be a porn star, but then that probably just meant she got paid a helluva lot more than the regular girls. Lance wondered if she was there to get âhead shots,â which of course in the adult industry meant full body shots, and then he wondered what she looked like naked, and then he wondered if she had already been in anything â maybe something he could find online.
Lance had to adjust his sitting position on the hood of Rayâs Crown Vic.
Christ, he needed to get laid.
âOkay. Okay,â Ray was saying, his words drifting back to the fore of Lanceâs consciousness as he forced himself to focus on why they were there. âYeah, two men should be fine. Sure. How soon do you â â
There was a crash, and Lanceâs head ducked instinctively as glass rained on the pavement around them. A large, heavy object crashed onto the ground not ten feet away, causing Lance to dive back for cover behind the hood of the Crown Vic.
Ray stood unmoving, phone still to his ear, looking at the object that had fallen.
âNever mind,â he sighed, and hung up, reaching for his pistol.
Lance poked his head up over the edge of the car to see why. There, lying broken, stabbed and shot, was Jimmy Bronson. He was duct taped to his office chair, and his eyes were wide in shock and terror.
âHoly shit!â Lance said. Then he looked to the building. âTheyâre still in there!â
âI know,â Ray told him. âIâm going in. You guard the front entrance.â
âThe hell if Iâm â â
âHey!â Ray cut him off. âIâm not shitting on you. Itâs a big ass building and they could sneak around me easy. We canât do anything about watching the back door, but you can guard the front. Make sure no one gets into a car and drives off, okay? We can measure our dicks later. Now call this in!â
Lance nodded, mollified. Ray had a point.
Ray disappeared inside the building, glock drawn. Lance kept his own weapon holstered, but undid the button holding it in so he could draw if he needed to. He yanked his cell phone out of his peacoat and dialed local PD.
âNine one one, what is your emergency?â crackled an operator in his ear.
âThis is federal agent Lance Mitchell,â he said, and gave his badge number. âI have a body at 8500 Steller Drive in Culver City. Suspect is still in the area, I need you to send any available units down here right now to establish a perimeter.
