Unwelcome Guests

Jasper

I heard the rumble of a car engine at the front door from my place in the kitchen where I was starting dinner for me, Dakota and Angelica. It took me a second to wonder why there was a car. It was too hot, with the July sun beating down on us most days, for Dakota to bother taking the car the short distance. Usually Dakota and Angel would shift, my little fox following the massive bear, and walk to the compound. From the upper floor, it was possible to see the boundary fence, so it wasn’t far. Dakota would carry a bag with their clothes that he’d bought specifically so he could carry it around his furry neck.

The voices approaching the kitchen were familiar. “Grady? Trey?” I looked into the hallway and found them: Trey carrying Angel and Dakota looking stiff and irritated. Fuck. I really should have given him more warning that they were coming. They weren’t supposed to arrive until later.

“Hey, Jas.” Grady came forward to hug me, ignoring the glare from my mate. I frowned, but hugged my friend tightly. I’d missed them over the last few months.

Trey came over next, still holding onto Angel, who looked like she had no plans to leave his side. “Hey, Jazzie.”

Batting at his arms, I moved away from the hug. “Told you not to call me that.”

He grabbed me, pulling me close, with Angelica squashed between us. She giggled as he tried to kiss my cheek. I squirmed away from him. From the corner of my eye, I caught Dakota glowering.

“I’ll go rescue dinner, make extra for your guests,” he said, and left us to catch up. Fuck, I was really messing this up.

Trey finally put Angel down now that Dakota was out of the way, and she tried to pull him upstairs to see her room. “I’ll come find you in a minute, Red. I need to speak to your papa.” He waited until she was in her room before turning an assessing gaze on me. Trey leaned over and scanned the hallway. “Him? Really? All of a sudden you’re pregnant and living with the guy? What the hell, Jas?”

“Shh!” I glared at Trey. “He’s my fated. You know things move faster for fated matches.” I said in an undertone, anger rising at the feeling that I was being judged. “Everything with Silas was over before anything happened with Dakota.” I pointed a finger at Trey as a reminder. “Silas ended it.”

“Only because he knew you didn’t love him. He’s in bits. He was right, though. You couldn’t have had any feelings for him if just days later you’re under this guy.” His voice rose with every sentence he spat and I cringed at the thought of Dakota and Angelica being able to hear it.

“Trey,” Grady put a hand on his mate’s shoulder. “Calm down. You know that a fated bond comes before anything else. We’ve talked about this.”

“A baby, though? Seriously?” Trey looked at me scornfully. “You were always so careful with Silas.
