Chapter Ten

He was going for it. The job was finished. If Nick wanted to fire him or censure him or write him up for asking out a client, so be it. But Diego couldn’t see how that could happen. It wasn’t like he’d been hired by Shelby or her team. If that were the case, he would never even be entertaining these thoughts. It was the event planners who put on the convention that hired him. They didn’t even know Shelby or talk to her. They did all the negotiations through Evelyn. He was acting above board.

Basically. Pretty much. And if not, he didn’t give a damn. He had to try. If she said no, it was fine. But if he never even asked, he would be kicking himself until he did. His lynx would be kicking him.

Diego couldn’t see any world in which his lynx would let him allow Shelby to leave town or his life without at least going on one date with her. As soon as the job was done and he was gearing up to leave, his animal had gone crazy. He was afraid he was going to shift in the crowded arena. It was scary and nothing like it had happened to him before. He’d heard rumors about shifters who’d lost control of their animals, but this didn’t feel exactly like that. This was more like what he’d heard a friend describe when he met his mate. His animal just took over and wouldn’t let him do anything until he was willing to go talk to her.

That was how this felt. Once he made up his mind that he wasn’t going to let Shelby go to the meetup without protection, his animal had calmed all the way down. Not even a peep from the thing. Until it was time to go at the end of the night. Then it was ready to fight him again.

He got it. He understood what he had to do to keep his sanity and his animal in check. He was going to have to ask Shelby out on a date. And it was now or never.

“Hey, can I talk to you for a second?” he asked when the last fan had gotten hugged and she was headed for the door.

“Sure, what’s up?” She looked so good in her little black dress. It wasn’t short and it wasn’t long either. But it was right and sexy in a demure way. Like a sexy librarian.

“I was wondering…” He swallowed. How was he supposed to do this in front of Evelyn and Linda? They weren’t paying close attention, but he knew they could hear him. He was going to be so embarrassed if she turned him down. The things his animal made him do. “Would you like to grab some wings with me?”

“Did they not have wings here?” She was looking at her phone again. “Did you not like any of the other food here? There were so many options. I was talking too much to have a full meal, but I tried stuff and it was all great.
