Chapter Nine

I can’t believe I just blurted that out like that.

Talk about a date-ending declaration.

It’s no wonder Preston hasn’t called or texted me in two days. I’m such a fool.

And now I’m twenty minutes away from seeing him for our tutoring session and I don’t even know if he’ll show up. Why would he? He probably thinks I’m the biggest loser ever.

God. He’s a freaking college hockey player and can get any girl he wants. Why would he even want to try to make the moves on an inexperienced virgin like me? Or continue pursuing something with me when he probably thinks I’m just an innocent who wears a chastity belt?

I swear his kisses were like truth serum and made me admit to my most embarrassing secret. Except for a few of my close friends, I’ve not shared that with anyone. It’s just not something you go around telling people. “Oh, hey, nice shirt. By the way, I’ve never had sex. Have a good day!”

My stomach has been in knots since he dropped me off and said goodbye on Saturday night. I obviously made a grievous error in judgment and he probably ran for the hills.

Shuffling my stack of books in front of me, I look up when I feel the weight of someone’s stare. My eyes connect with Preston’s who stands on the opposite side of the table. He’s wearing a Bears hockey T-shirt and jeans and is smiling down on me like nothing has happened. Like he hasn’t left me hanging for the last two days since our nearly perfect date!

“Hey Brin.” His voice isn’t overly apologetic but seems eager enough.

I fidget in my chair, trying for nonchalant. “Hi.”

Pulling out the seat across from me, he sets his book bag down and sits, his gaze never disconnecting from my face, even though I awkwardly glance around at everything but him.

“I wasn’t sure you were going to come today.”

Oh, my Lord, did I just admit that? What is with Preston that makes me say everything I’m thinking?

Confusion spreads across his face in a furrowed brow and pinched lips.

“Why wouldn’t I be here?”

I lift a shoulder in a sheepish shrug. “I don’t know…I guess, I thought maybe…”

Turning my head to hide my embarrassment, the words dry up in my throat. I grab for my water bottle, pop the top with my thumb, but my hands shake and as I try to lift it off the table, it fumbles from my hand and spills all over the dark mahogany wood, cascading over the edge and onto Preston’s lap.

Water is everywhere.

“Oh my God! Preston, I’m so sorry!” My voice is a fever-pitch as I rush over to the other side, and without a thought, whip off my sweater that covers my tank, and start to blot up the water that’s falling over his thick thighs and crotch.

Yes folks, I am kneeling in the library, patting down Preston Dahl’s groin with my clothing. Awkward alert!

His body convulses with laughter, as I peer up underneath my lashes to find him shaking his head with mirth.
