TWENTY-SIX

‘Not so fast, young lady.’ Ann-Marie corners Carla in the hallway. ‘We haven’t finished with all this yet.’

‘I’ve got nothing more to say to you.’

I guess she wouldn’t have. Carla’s done what she came to do – she’s shredded the evidence they’ve been lording over her. But the Elmer family are not about to let her get away, that much is obvious. And where I’m going to factor into all this is anyone’s guess.

‘I’d like a word with you in private if you don’t mind.’ Ann-Marie grips Carla’s shoulder and attempts to shove her towards the kitchen.

‘There’s nothing you can do or say that can change my mind, Ann-Marie. Dominic and I are divorced and I’m cutting all ties with the lot of you from now on.’ Carla jabs her finger in the air. ‘And that’s the end of it.’

She tries to shake free of Ann-Marie’s grip on her shoulder, but with Roger and Dominic right behind her, she’s not going anywhere. Who knows where this is going to end? Sophie’s standing by the front door, as if she’s guarding the entrance in case Carla tries to get out that way. Surely not though? I can’t imagine Sophie would have supported how her family have been blackmailing Carla.

‘You’re in my house. So, it’s the end when I say it’s the end – do you understand?’ Roger’s tone is calm, yet menacing. I’ve never warmed to this man and with very good reason. Carla and I could be in real trouble here. And after what I’ve seen on the video recording, I’ve got every right to be worried.

But Sophie’s here and I’m sure she’ll intervene if things get any more out of hand. Even if I’m not entirely sure anymore how much I can trust her.

‘Let me get to my room, Ann-Marie.’

‘You’re not going anywhere until this is sorted. It doesn’t even need to be the shares anymore – we can clear this up simply by you transferring the necessary money to our account.’ Ann-Marie tries to turn her back in the direction of the office. ‘Then you can leave as soon as this weather eases, we can all get back to business, and there doesn’t have to be any more unpleasantness between us.’

‘Your family’s had more than enough of my money.’ As Carla tries to force herself through the three-person-strong wall, I try to visualise whether our bedrooms have inside locks, but I don’t think they do. Maybe we’ll have to barricade ourselves in one of the bathrooms. However, judging by the fury on all their faces, they’d probably kick the door in to get at us. There’s only Sophie who seems to be staying calm.

Suddenly, Dominic barges forward and slams Carla into the kitchen door.

‘Get away from me.’ Her voice is a wheeze – the impact of her back against the wood seems to have winded her.

‘Dominic! Stop!’ I lunge in their direction, but Roger blocks my path. I can’t believe what he’s doing to her.

I feel in my pocket for my phone.
