Chapter Ten
âYou cannot keep staring at Lady Denfield.â
Charlotte tossed her head.
âI am not looking at her!â Her face heated as her friend laughed. âI am waiting for Lord Silverton to arrive. That is why I keep looking around me.â
The truth was that, while she had been looking for Lord Silverton, she was also looking at Lady Denfield. As yet, she was uncertain of whether or not Lord Silverton would take what she had told him with any great seriousness. The fact of the matter was that he could easily turn around and say that he did not believe her, or that the matter was of very little interest, and that the truth would out itself, soon enough, rather than do what she thought he ought to do, which was to find out the truth before it was too late.
âI am sure that Lord Silverton will be glad to talk to you, although will you still have to remain discreet?â
Charlotte nodded, but said nothing, all too aware that she would have to remain quite hidden from her mother. Her heart quickened a little as she saw Lady Denfield moving across the room. She herself had lingered near the door of the ballroom, wanting desperately to see the lady in question, as though by watching her, she might somehow ascertain exactly what it was that she was doing. It was a foolish thought, of course, but it was one which would not leave her. It was as if she felt obliged to do something for fear that Lord Silverton would not.
âYou do have some feelings for Lord Silverton, then.â
Lady Florenceâs voice was soft, and Charlotte fought to find a response that would not require her to be so brutally honest. Lady Florence chuckled.
âIf you are thinking of pretending, then you need not do so. Have I not always encouraged you to think of your feelings when it comes to considering the gentlemen of London? I am glad now that you are doing so.â
âI am concerned for him, that is all.â
Not quite able to look at her friend, Charlotte managed a vague smile in Lady Florenceâs direction, but it was not enough to convince her.
âI do not believe that you would have acted in such a decisive manner if you had not had any true feelings for the gentleman.â Lady Florence tipped her head, her gaze fixed on Charlotteâs. âAnd you need not pretend either. I am delighted!â
Twisting her lips, Charlotte fought for an answer, but, in the end, did not give one. The truth was that her feelings for Lord Silverton had become very strange indeed these last few days. It was as though, in admitting to herself that she liked the gentleman, she had opened up her heart completely. The way that he had taken her hand when they had spoken had sent her heart into flurries, and the softness about his gaze had reached into her completely. For the present, she was trying to determine whether or not these feelings
