The road to Fincreag marked a couple of important milestones in Lorraine’s life. It was the farthest she had ever been from home and it was the longest that she had ever spent on the road. The journey took four days and it took her through some of the most beautiful Highland scenery she had ever seen.

After a day’s ride, the Maxwell procession, which she was a part of, made it to the banks of the swift-flowing and treacherous Liath River and began to follow it. It was this river, Lorraine knew from her study of maps in her father’s office, which the town of Fincreag straddled.

Whilst they were camping near the river’s banks on the first evening and the men were setting up the impressive tent which Lorraine would share with her father, she went down and dipped her toes in the Liath as it raced past on its determined way to the sea. It was icy cold, the water fresh snowmelt from the cold hills further north.

Lorraine was part of a caravan that included her father and some of his most closely-trusted advisors. She could tell that this meeting—a meeting that had been pushed upon the Maxwell clan by their two peaceful neighboring clans—rankled with her father.

His pride has taken a wee knock, havin’ tae acquiesce tae the ministrations of the Munros and the Chisholms. Only the fact that the Cameron has also agreed to the meetin’ has kept him from ventin’ his spleen.

As they rode, Lorraine mused on whether this meeting would achieve anything that even resembled a truce between the two clans. They were so enthused about being at each other’s throats, and had two equally stubborn men heading them, that Lorraine just could not see it happening.

The landscape became less mountainous as they followed the Liath River into the gentler, undulating lands of the southern Highlands. The craggy peaks and tors were replaced by the expanses of rich grazing country. Meadow-grass and matgrass prevailed, with a plethora of rushes and sedges growing in happy abundance in the damper areas. Scattered across the rolling hills, Lorraine often saw small herds of Highland cattle roaming contentedly.

Thankfully, the changing countryside and the talk that the men of her father’s household seemed only too keen to strike up with her, meant that Lorraine had precious few moments in which to dwell on Niall.

I imagine that he’ll be told to stay at home whilst his faither attends this council. A pity in a way, but probably fer the best. Things are already fraught enough without us havin’ tae try and ignore one another.

Still, having the handsome Cameron clansman in her sight—if not, as he had said, within her grasp—would at least have given Lorraine something to look at whilst the meetings took place. As it was, she was not entirely sure why it was that she had been brought along. Her father had muttered something about clan representation before they had set out, and his tone had told Lorraine that she would get no further explanation from him on this score.
