Present Day

Rosemary Run, California

As Michael’s truck sped out of the Maison du Vin parking lot, his tires squealed, flinging gravel in every direction. He drove as fast as he could in the hopes that no one would move quickly enough to follow.

He’d asked his business associate, Omar Cox, to create a diversion that would occupy local police. Apparently, Omar had been successful. There was no sign of officers from the Rosemary Run Police Department, despite what Michael assumed were several calls for assistance. He’d seen the concern in the eyes of the crowd. He knew they’d had their smartphones in hand, some dialing while others took photos and videos. He didn’t much care. He believed himself to be above the law. If the F.B.I. hadn’t been able to pin anything on him by now, he didn’t believe small town cops would pose a threat. Not really.

Michael glanced over at Amelia. Her eyes were rolled back in her head and she didn’t appear to be conscious. She’ll come around, he thought. He was convinced she would ultimately meet his every need, including his need for a cover story that would allow him to conduct business in Northern California. It had worked for months now. It was time to go off the grid now and to take the next step in securing his pipeline.

To achieve his criminal dreams, Michael needed to become a ghost for a while. A ghost hiding in plain sight. He’d procured a motor home and he intended to travel the backcountry with Amelia while handling his business affairs discreetly. If anyone came sniffing around, he’d tell them he was a nature enthusiast on an extended trip with his lovely wife. No one would be any the wiser, he was certain.

To be sure plenty of people knew about their travel plans and believed them to be innocuous, Michael had made a big deal of asking Amelia to go away with him. He’d told her romantic stories about how they’d hike by day, sit around the campfire at night, and make love under the stars. She’d believed him. She’d even hoped that things between them might take a turn for the better. That somehow, traveling the backcountry would bring them closer together. Michael was largely indifferent to those hopes. He had what he considered to be more important things on his mind.

“You little cunt,” Michael snarled at Amelia, even though she wasn’t conscious to hear him. “You nearly ruined everything. Now there’s doubt about me. They think I’m a bad guy. They’ll try and come after me.”

The truck labored as it got up to full speed on the open road, practically groaning with the effort. The vehicle wasn’t built for speed and Michael was too hard on it, much like he was on everything and everyone else.

“That’s okay,” he continued, directing his words at Amelia, but really just talking to himself. “I’m not giving up that easily. I’ve foiled plenty of people who thought they’d get the best of me. I made it through before, and I’ll do it again.
