By the time Ben and Rae returned from their ride and headed toward the farmhouse hand-in-hand, Missy and Tucker had already arrived. Ben knew, because the familiar sound of Fritz’s barks echoed around the silent farm.

“That’s Missy’s dog,” he said, taking a detour around the house to the front yard instead of entering it. Sure enough, Tucker stood near the driveway and tossed a ball. Fritz and Rambo tore after it, with Fritz catching it in midair before veering back to Tucker. The dog dropped the ball at Tucker’s feet and barked. Barked. Barked.

Rambo sat down, his tongue lolling out of his mouth sideways and his tail thumping the grass. Tucker threw the ball again.

“Hey, Tucker,” Ben said.

Tucker turned toward him. “There you are.”

“Are we late?” Ben looked toward the farmhouse.

“Missy insisted we come early. She wanted to talk to Rae.”

“I’ll go in.” Rae gave Ben a smile, removed her hand from his, and maneuvered through the dog fray toward the front porch.

“Sorry,” Ben said. “You guys always come at five. I thought we had plenty of time.”

Tucker threw the ball and settled his weight on his back leg. “We do. You know how Missy gets.” He grinned at Ben. “You take Rae out into the woods?”

Ben ducked his head. He didn’t have a lot of experience with women, but even he knew better than to kiss and tell. “Yeah. It’s peaceful out there.”

Tucker nodded. “That it is.”

“Sometimes I just skip church and spend the day in the woods, with my horse.”

“No better place to commune with God.”

Ben exhaled and looked out over the horizon. In the distance, the blurred edge of Island Park sat. Ben had been in a lot of rural locations. Farms in the middle of Idaho. Ranches in the wilds of Montana. Corrals at the base of mountains, without any other people around. He’d always felt close to the Lord under the clear, clean sky.

He’d always gone alone when he needed to find his center again. He’d always spent a lot of time thinking about his parents and expressing his gratitude for Sam. But today, he’d spent his time talking to and thinking about Rae. Kissing Rae. Holding her hand and laughing with her.

He felt just as centered. Gratitude descended on him and he said, “Thanks, Tucker.”

“For what?”

Ben met the older man’s eye. And though Tucker had lots of money, and owned the farm, and held more experience and wisdom in his pinky finger than Ben had in his whole body, Ben didn’t feel as inadequate as he normally did.

“For this job.” He smiled, and the gesture wobbled a little on his face. “For everything.”

Tucker seemed to know Ben meant more than he was able to say. “Missy made lasagna and her banana maple cake. She’s probably spitting fire by now. Let’s go eat.”

“Banana maple cake? She really did go all out.” Ben laughed, truly realizing for the first time how many good people he had surrounding him.

“Well, I don’t eat fruit, so she has to do something with all those black bananas.
