Mya

SATURDAY

I’ve got too much on my mind and not enough downtime to figure out what I’m going to do next. Stress eats at me as I pull out of the busy parking lot and gun it when I hit the main road. I hang a hard left at the green light right before it turns yellow.

The little voice in my head is screaming at me to slow down and be more careful, but I can’t seem to do that. I want to drive fast; I want to speed through these curvy roads that wind their way around the mountains. I want to do whatever it takes to feel like I’m more in control of everything that’s going on.

“Incoming call from Gareth,” my car tells me. I answer it, barely glancing at the built-in screen on the dash. I know where every button in this car is, know exactly where I have to reach and what to press to get the car to respond to me.

“Mya, what are you doing?” His voice is warm and low, and it fills the car. I shiver into it, enjoying the way it wraps around me. Most people wouldn’t understand why I feel the way I do about Gareth. He’s dangerous, deadly.

But only for me, never against me. That’s what makes this different than being with other men who want to be dangerous and scary. Sure, Gareth terrifies other people, but not me. He’s never once been unkind to me. He’s powerful, but uses that power to take care of me.

“Just picked up my dry cleaning,” I tell him, glancing behind me in my rearview mirror when a small movement catches my eye. “You know how hard it is to keep white things clean.”

He chuckles. “I’m going to be home late. I have to finish up this plan to get more suppliers under us. Will you be okay for dinner?”

“Of course I will.” Before, it bothered me that he wasn’t going to be home for the evening. I hated it that I wasn’t going to get to see him before I went to bed, but now I know better than to get upset. Everything Gareth does is for me.

Including blackmailing Eve to make sure she helps out with our business.

“Good. How did it go with introducing Eve as the new contact today? Did they give you the package?”

The package.

I put it under the driver’s seat and then forgot I even had it. My stomach sinks when I think about it there, exposed, ready for anyone to come along and see it.

“Things went fine,” I tell him, adjusting my course away from my house toward Eve’s. “She was fine. Chatty all of a sudden. I didn’t like it.”

I didn’t like it doesn’t come close to how much I hated Eve’s inquisitiveness. It wasn’t like her at all.

“Nervous?” I hear him swallow, and it’s clear he’s drinking a little whiskey while he works. Gareth isn’t someone who drinks to excess, but he and I both know that sometimes a little alcohol makes putting plans together that much easier.
