Jess led Tina into her room by the hand. âThis is my roomâ she said, âElla and Jax are next door that sideâ she pointed at the wall facing them, âand Grant is that sideâ she pointed to the wall beside them. âHe smellsâ she added.
Tina smirked at the last comment. âYou don't have to share?â
âI prob'ly will, but not now, this is just mineâ the young girl said.
Tina cast her eyes over the room. The room was incredibly tidy. There were ample cupboards and a small wardrobe but she'd still expected toys and clothes to litter the floor. The walls were plastered in posters cut from magazines and pictures printed from the internet but between the images, a dull, magnolia shone through where the neutral paintwork hadn't been quite obscured.
The bed was pushed up against the wall under the window and the duvet covering it was a bright rainbow pattern. Sitting on the bed were three cuddly toys; a teddy bear, an elephant and something not immediately recognisable that transpired to be a koala bear.
The pictures and coloured duvet tried but didn't quite manage to hide the fact that the room was ever in a state of change. It was never owned, only borrowed and Tina felt a sadness in the knowledge. There should be toys and clothes on the floor, the walls should be bright and colourful. Even the brown carpet looked sad.
Jess tugged Tina further into the room and up to the bed. She picked up the stuffed elephant and waved his trunk at Tina. âThis is Trunkyâ she said, âMaddy bought him for me.â She let go of Tina's hand and hugged the toy close with both arms. âSmells like him.â
She cocked her head to one side and peered at Tina over the elephant's head. Indecisive, she frowned a moment then said âYou know he's a boy don't you?â
Tina's sad visage cracked and she smiled at the eight year old, nodding. âYes, I know he's a boy!â
âMost people don't get itâ Jess continued, tucking Trunky under one arm and crossing back to the wardrobe behind her. One side of the wardrobe consisted of drawers and a small fold down flap which the girl lowered and struggled to lock into place without dropping her toy. âHe's my big sister... but he's a boy too.â She turned and faced Tina and with a very serious expression she added âIt's complicated.â
Tina stifled the urge to laugh. She moved alongside the little girl at her urging and peered into the flap as she started to slide bits and pieces around and to bring some of the contents out onto the flap. It was make-up. Not a huge amount but all of it was good quality and expensive.
âMaddy gave me all this. He showed me how to use it too.â The girl picked up a lipstick and unscrewed the cap, inadvertently dropping the toy under her arm to the floor. She glanced down and then returned her gaze to the pastel pink lipstick.
