With all the windows open in our new home, the cross breeze is amazing. I have everything we need for sandwiches in the refrigerator, and Luke and I just returned from another trip to our apartment with more of our things. We really need help this weekend getting our few pieces of furniture moved over, but it’s been wonderful moving our clothes and books and toys into the house.

Doing it after I get off work is exhausting, but what choice do I have? I want nothing more than to get out of the apartment as soon as possible.

And this place is starting to feel like a real home.

Of course, it will feel more like a home when there aren’t a few boxes in every room, but that doesn’t really matter for one reason. Those boxes are ours. They’re stacked along our walls. They’re in our home. It fills me with more joy than I thought possible when I think about the fact that this is our home and nobody can take it from us.

Well, I guess the bank could if we missed payments, but that’s not going to happen.

I’m even going to put a little extra on each monthly payment to try to get this place paid off sooner rather than later. It’s going to feel amazing to make my final mortgage payment, and I’m already looking forward to that day even though it won’t be for years.

Decades, even.

“Luke, come on out of your room!” I call, grabbing some plates from boxes and making sandwiches. Really, I just want to use those words, your room, because he’s never had his own space like this. It’s always been our room, and now he finally has somewhere he can go and hide and curl up without worrying about getting in my way.

It’s amazing.

There’s a momentary pause, and I stop, the knife slick with jelly above a slice of cheap white bread, but then there are his feet, pitter-pattering towards me, running across the empty house.

I smile.

He wasn’t allowed to run in the apartment because there was always the chance we’d wake up our downstairs neighbor. Mr. Fred hated little kids and made that clear every single time we saw him out and about. Luke had to pretend like he didn’t exist, which is really hard when you’re a toddler.

So, should he be running in the house? Probably not, but I’m not going to stop him. I want him to enjoy himself and to feel at home here.

“What is it?” He tugs at my jeans, and I scoop him up and plop him on the counter to see what I’m making.

“PB and J with some chips. There’s cookies too, for any little good boys who eat their crusts.” I poke him in the stomach with the handle of the knife, and he giggles. “Do you want to eat inside at our little table or have a picnic in the yard?”

“Picnic!” He throws his arms into the air, and I pick him up and deposit him back on the floor.
