HELENA

It doesn’t break; it heaves upward. The metal twists and writhes, ensnaring the scythe and carrying it higher and higher—a tower of wrought iron as it flows like water to the top of the sconce. Sparks whirl around the tower, kissing the metal until it alights in a flaming whoosh.

Tobias stumbles backward, eyes wide. Logan steadies him, a hand on each of our backs as we stare up at the burning flame.

Instantly, I know why this ceremony always ends in a kiss.

It’s already coursing through me—this need, this life. Of course, hellfire is what births the demons’ souls—the souls of all the hellborn. It’s sacred. Devastating.

In the name of Hell and the Devil, and in the absence of God.

The rejection of Him.

I shudder, the knowledge flooding me, filling me with something nameless.

“Did you know what became of Lucifer’s power, when he fell from Heaven?” Tobias asks mildly, staring up into the flame.

“I heard… a myth…” I breathe. “But I don’t know for sure.”

“The myths are true. It transformed into the stars,” his voice is almost sing song. “He fell and he fell, and his light burned into a thousand stars—stars just like those he used to create. But down here, there are no stars to light the sky. There is only fire.”

Along the soulbond, I can feel something terrible stirring. Rising. Something that doesn’t feel like Lucifer at all, and only barely feels like the Devil I thought I knew. I don’t know why Tobias is telling us this now, but there’s a tragedy to it that doesn’t bear words. An angel of light, of stars. He fell to the bowels of Hell and kept falling… and there is no light here. No light but fire, which is so very different. So very, very different.

Shock and rage pour down the bond, but it doesn’t scare me. Nothing could scare me, when I stand before this blazing inferno and defy the Heavens that made me who I am.

Tobias lips come crashing down on mine, his hands clutching at my waist as he devours me, desperately aching for it. Logan stands behind him, eyes blazing gold, as he nips and caresses Tobias’ neck. Claiming him as Tobias claims me.

I let out a moan, shivering as his hands roam my body and he guides me backward step by step.

Then pauses.

He lifts his head, eyes meeting Logan’s. Something silent passes between them, and then they switch positions—so fast, I barely see it.

I expect Logan to take me apart just as roughly, but it’s nothing like that at all.

Instead, he shares another glance with Tobias, and then yanks me so that my legs are wrapped around his waist, tightening reflexively as he scoops a hand below my hips and lifts me into the air.

“Whoa,” I mutter, clutching onto his shoulders, losing breath as he kisses me once more and rises to his feet.

“I’m not sure where you’re planning on taking me, but Lucifer’s bed is still an option,” I manage to get out between feral, hungry kisses.
