CHAPTER 20

Brett’s still staring at me, and I shift away from him. “Shane, what would you do if you saw Mr. Tremaine going after Tyler and it looked like he was going to kill him?”

“I would tackle him to the ground,” Shane says immediately.

“What if he has a weapon on him?” I ask.

“I don’t think he’s ever used a weapon on Tyler before,” Corey interjects.

“Maybe, maybe not, but Tyler’s also never stood up to him like this before,” I argue. “Who knows how Mr. Tremaine will react? Plus, his arm is broken. You know that won’t stop him, not entirely, but he’s limited in what he can do physically.”

“Can you all stop talking about my dad now?” Tyler comments as he re-enters the tree house. He doesn’t look too happy at all.

“Is everything all right with your mom?” I ask gently.

“If you’re truly asking if she’s going to go crawling back to my dad, I can’t answer that. She thinks that might save me, but I’ve tried to convince her that it might cost her her life. She doesn’t really believe me about that, but then again, when did she ever believe me about anything concerning my dad? She thinks he’s a saint. Well, maybe not a saint, but she thinks he’s misunderstood, that he doesn’t realize how strong he is, that I have done things to piss him off and deserve it…”

“That’s terrible,” I murmur.

“Yeah, well, she told me she’ll stay away for now, but what I don’t get is how it is that he’s hounding her. I told her that she shouldn’t have her old phone on her, that he might try to track her through it, and if she gets rid of it, then how can he try to contact her?”

“Email?” Corey suggests.

"I guess, but she should start a new account." Tyler rolls his eyes. "She's not always the most tech-savvy."

“Does she work?” I ask, almost not wanting to know the answer.

Tyler shakes his head.

“When did she last have a job?” I ask. “Before you were born?”

"I think. A long-ass gap in her employment history. Not gonna look good for her if she tries to get a new job, but that's exactly what she's going to have to do. She can't rely on Dad's money. Not anymore."

“What does your dad do?” I ask, curious since they do seem to be made of money, even more so than Corey, and his parents both work.

“He’s some kind of businessman,” Tyler says with a shrug. “He doesn’t provide any details, and it’s rather clear that he doesn’t intend to have me follow in his footsteps.”

“You don’t need him,” I murmur.

“Damn straight I don’t, but I can’t deny that Mom may have a point. If my dad shows up at the school, are they really not going to hand me over?”

“If you talk to someone,” I start.

Tyler snorts. “Who?”

“The counselor. The police. I don’t know if it matters who—”

“The first time my dad burned me, I told my teacher,” Tyler says.
