Chapter Eight
âI hope you know something about dogs.â
Alexandra dug her car keys out of her pocket. âActually, I do, but youâre not paying me for that.â
âGetting tough with me, are you?â He crossed his arms over his chest, impressive as always with the shadows clinging to him and the wind ruffling his dark hair. âI knew you were too good to be true. Now I see the real Alexandra.â
âOh, youâre one to talk. Hiring me to keep house and look after your daughter, and now this. A hidden agenda.â
âGuilty as charged. Except I didnât know we were going to get a dog so soon.â
âYou must have known you would fold and give in to Haileyâs wishes. After all, Mrs. Whitly told me you had asked about the puppies only last week.â
âCanât trust anyone to keep a secret. Whatâs the world coming to? Okay, so I had a suspicion, but thatâs all it was. Mom doesnât know anything about dogs, either, so that leaves us at your mercy.â
âYouâre in luck. I do have some puppy knowledge, but itâs going to cost you.â
âI knew you were going to say that. Okay, give it to me. How much is this going to set me back?â
âYour momâs potato salad recipe. Hey, donât look at me like that. I know whatâs important in life.â
âGetting you all the gold in Fort Knox would be easier. Do you know my mom guards that secret family recipe with her life? Is there any chance I could just pay you extra?â
âNope.â Alexandra swung her car door open. âTalk to Bev.â
âSheâs gonna hurt me if I ask her for the recipe.â
âA big brave man like you shouldnât be afraid of a little pain.â She couldnât help teasing. âStill want my help with the puppy?â
He gestured toward the pickupâs passenger window where Hailey could be seen through the tempered glass, her cheek to the puppyâs cute round head. They were nuzzling, clearly in love, as only little girls and their puppies can be.
âI need all the help I can get,â John confessed. âAre you going to make me beg?â
âItâs tempting, but Iâll spare you this time.â Alexandra dropped her purse on the floor. âIâll follow you to the grocery store.â
âYouâre going to have fun spending my money, arenât you?â
âWeâll just pick up a few things the puppy needs for tonight, but thereâs a pet store in Bozeman that could be making a profit tomorrow.â
Johnâs fist flew to his heart, as if sheâd inflicted a mortal wound. âIâll take it like a man and give you my credit card.â
âAnd how exactly am I going to use your credit card without being arrested for fraud?â
âI know the owner of the pet store. Iâll give him a call first thing in the morning.â
âGood.â She tossed him a smile that could charm the sun out of the sky and slipped behind the wheel of her rusted yellow VW.
Slim and lithe, as graceful as dreams, she lifted her delicate hand in a wave, silver rings flashing, before backing out of the driveway.
