Chapter Nine
Christina watched Grace walk up to the table where Mike and Justin were sitting with Kyle Lundgren. Grace had been shy as long as Christina had known her, but these days she seemed to need to be right in the middle of the action at all times. It had always been she, Christina, who had been the bold one, the one not afraid to go right up to a group of people and talk to them. What had happened to Grace? What had made her change so quickly?
She wondered if Grace had said anything to Mike about her yet. Did Grace like him too? She watched Grace chatting away with the three boys, and then Mike and Kyle stood up and left the table, so Grace and Justin were sitting by themselves. She didn’t know Justin—he lived in the next town over and went to Central Middle School—but he didn’t seem like the boyfriend type. Hmm, could it be possible that Grace liked him? No way. Grace was taller than he was. She was startled out of her musings when she noticed Mike coming over to talk to her.
“What’s up?” he greeted as he approached her.
“Not much,” she said. “Just helping Coach Dana and Coach Michelle figure out the order of events and stuff. It’s more complicated than I thought. If someone’s both a swimmer and a diver, I don’t want to put her events too close together or she could miss her turn or she could be really tired from having just competed.” Was he even listening to her? His eyes were scanning the pool behind her, as though he wasn’t paying attention to a word she said.
“So, you coming to the pool party here on Friday night?” he asked casually, still not looking at her.
Wait. Was he asking her to the party? Like, asking her out? He made it so hard to tell! “Uh, I guess so.” In fact, she’d been trying on different outfit combinations for a week now. “Are you going?”
“Yeah, but on the later side.”
Silence. So he wasn’t asking her out. Fail. She was determined to keep the conversation going, though. “I just love dancing, don’t you? If it’s the right music, of course.”
Mike shrugged. “I’m not so good at dancing, actually.”
“I don’t believe that. You’re such a good athlete. You must be able to dance a little.”
Mike shook his head. “Not my thing, I guess. Anyway, the reason I asked if you’re going is that I signed up to sell raffle tickets from five to six, but I can’t make it till later. I’m going to my friend’s meet and it’s away that day. Do you know anyone who could sub for me?”
“Don’t worry about it,” she said. “I’ll cover for you.”
He grinned at her. He had the most beautiful smile. “Thanks. I owe you.”
“No big deal.”
Her mind was whirling. Maybe this was kind of, sort of, his way of asking her to the party? Maybe he was so awkward, he was making
