The morning ended on a much better note, thankfully. Once we got inside, everything seemed fine, and I started to think I was letting my paranoia get the best of me. That Iâd possibly imagined the scorned look on Brookeâs face. The stress was obviously getting to me, and I needed to find a better way to deal with it.
Because Madeline and Brooke were not only professional in their first official business meeting, they were downright friendly. It was a short meeting, but it set things on the right course. It was held in the head of schoolâs officeâMadelineâs new workspaceâand although itâs one of the larger offices at the school, thatâs not saying much. Itâs functional but on the smaller side for a position of that level and badly in need of renovation.
The work area houses a large walnut desk that takes up too much space, a few bookshelves, a large filing cabinet, and two leather swivel chairs facing the massive desk. As a consequence, the sitting area is a bit cramped. A compact brown leather loveseat butts up against the wall near the small closet, with a club chair kitty-corner to it. It made me nervous that Brooke and Madeline would be in such close proximity.
When my wife sat in the club chair, I was forced to sit next to Brooke on the loveseat. I positioned myself on the far side, so the two women would be facing each other and Iâd have a good vantage point from which to observe their interaction. They were so close together, their knees almost touched, and if I didnât know better, Iâd have thought they were good friends. They went over the order of events for the faculty-staff meeting, and Madeline thanked Brooke for her support. Iâm confident now that Madeline doesnât suspect anything.
The larger meeting went very well too. I started it off and then gave the floor to Brooke. Brooke introduced Madeline. Weâd all agreed it would be better that way, rather than having her husband do it. Her address was short and to the point, with just the right touch of authority and humility. I felt proud.
Then Madeline informed everyone about the celebration of life at the school for Doug Walker. His family had held a small, private ceremony in Atlanta, where he was from, over Christmas break. His wife and kids had stayed there to finish out the school year, so they had no real connection to Falcon Ridge. But everyone at school needed some closure, so we decided weâd organize a celebration for him. During her talk, it crossed my mind that we should probably include that teacher too, and I made a mental note to point that out to Brooke, Madeline, and the other board members. And then it wrapped up without further incident.
Now, Iâm trying to figure out how to get a message to Brooke that Iâll have her money in a few days, a method that wonât leave any evidence. Then I need to get going to my donor meeting.
