SESSION 3

Lenten Practice

By faith in Christ you are in direct relationship with God. Your baptism in Christ was not just washing you up for a fresh start. It also involved dressing you in an adult faith wardrobe—Christ’s life, the fulfillment of God’s original promise.

Galatians 3:26–27 MSG

CLOTHED WITH CHRIST IN GOD’S PRESENCE

In the group session, Max described how Christ not only offered us his own robe of perfection but also invited us into God’s presence. Jesus wore our sin so we could wear his righteousness, and we leave the cross dressed in the “coat of his strong love” (Isaiah 59:17 NCV). Through his death, Christ destroyed the barrier that once separated us from God, and we now have direct access to God’s presence. The challenge and opportunity we have each day is to live in conscious awareness of God’s presence with us. Author and pastor A.W. Tozer writes:

God wills that we should push on into his Presence and live our whole life there. This is to be known to us in conscious experience. It is more than a doctrine to be held, it is a life to be enjoyed every moment of every day. . . . The greatest fact of the tabernacle was that Jehovah was there; a Presence was waiting within the veil. Similarly the Presence of God is the central fact of Christianity. At the heart of the Christian message is God himself waiting for his redeemed children to push in to conscious awareness of his Presence.12
