On a dark, empty road on the other side of town, Slappy the dummy found what he was looking for. The small split-level house was lit up for Halloween, its stoop crowded with jack-oâ-lanterns and its lawn dominated by a large, plastic Headless Horseman.
Slappy closed his eyes. He opened his wooden arms wide. Then he recited the necessary words. âKarru Marri Odonna Loma Molonu Karrano â¦â
The Headless Horseman lurched to life, swinging blindly from side to side and then galloping into the night. The jack-oâ-lanterns blinked their pulpy eyes awake, bared orange fangs, and then sprouted wings and lifted into the sky. A skull hanging from the porch twisted toward Slappy. Its jawbone creaked as it gave Slappy a bony grin.
Slappy grinned back. âSlappy Halloween!â
This Halloween was, for Slappy, going to be very happy. He hummed merrily as he walked down the street, awakening each decoration he passed. By the time he reached the floodlit parking lot of a Walgreens, the night had come alive with monsters. Slappy heard screams in the distance. His smile grew.
The store was dark and quiet, manned by a single employee. His name tag read WALTER. Slappy slipped past him easily and went straight for the Halloween aisle. He found exactly what he was looking for: a collection of Goosebumps costumes.
The Abominable Snowman. The Werewolf of Fever Swamp. The Haunted Mask. Slappy pointed at each in turn, as if saying hello to old friends.
âIf those kids donât want me in their family, Iâll raise one of my own,â he told his fellow monsters.
Then, with a single incantation, he brought every nightmare to life.
