Chapter 18

Hailey

I woke up with something warm against my back and it took me a minute to remember where I was. A soft snore behind me brought a smile to my face, and carefully, I turned under the covers. Jacob was asleep on top of the blankets while I was under them, both of us still fully dressed. His hand was resting on my side as I watched him sleep, seeing the peaceful expression on his handsome face.

When I first met him, only a few days ago, I could see the stress and anger he carried around, and hearing about his and Rose’s kidnapping, I could understand why. He was protective down to his core, and I couldn’t imagine what he must have experienced at the hands of the man who apparently was stalking me too.

I’d tried to see a connection to me, Rose, and the mysterious man named Bronston, but for the life of me, I couldn’t find one. My early life sucked ass, but after I went into the foster system, things got better. Since I aged out, I’d stayed to myself mostly and kept my circle small. Having spent the last few days with the Death Hounds, I realized I’d allowed myself to become vulnerable by keeping myself hidden away.

Jacob was cracking the shell I’d encased myself in with each touch, kiss, and whispered word of affection. If it came from anyone else, I probably wouldn’t believe them, but hearing and feeling his love for me, I knew it to be true.

Love.

I never thought I would be able to open my heart to anyone enough to experience love, and now that I have, I knew waiting for him was the right decision. The desire I felt for Jacob made me feel almost normal, and everything inside me said he was the one I could safely share not only my nightmares with but my daydreams as well.

Having lived through the darkness my early life was enveloped in, I never learned how young adults came into the sexuality naturally. Lying in bed next to Jacob, I was starting to understand better the things that I’d missed. The feeling of butterflies when he walks into the room, the nervousness of sharing secrets, and the expectations for each embrace were all so new and exciting.

If someone would have told me last year—hell, even last week—that a handsome biker was going to ride into my life and show me all the wonderful and amazing things I was missing out on, I would have told them they were insane. Now, I want every minute, every second I could have with Jacob.

A part of me still worried what was going to happen when Devlin and James finished their digging, but I had to trust Jacob when he said he would protect me. I refused to give Melody any more of my energy after learning the bitch wasn’t my real mother. She wasn’t even a caregiver to me, and she fed me to the wolves for her own selfish gain.
