‘Liv, I need you in my office!’

She suppressed a groan at the sound of her brother’s voice. It was gone eight o’clock and she was starving. What was more, there would be no escape from him when she got home. Since he’d revealed the money troubles the business was having, they’d all clubbed together to work out the best way to use their assets to provide a cash injection. And right now, that meant that she and her two brothers had all given up their individual homes to live in the house that she had inherited from her grandmother the year before. She’d probably sell it, once they had a minute to think about how to do that, given the amount of paperwork selling a listed building that had been in her family for a hundred years would produce.

‘Jonathan, couldn’t this wait until we’re home?’ she said, pushing files into her bag as she walked through the door to her brother’s office.

When she looked up, she was half a step from colliding with the broad chest and black T-shirt of Adam Jackson.

‘Oh, of course you’re here,’ she groaned, earning her a smirk from Adam and a tired sigh from Jonathan. At least she would be home soon, where—with Rowan or alone—she could lock herself in her room and pretend that her brother didn’t exist. ‘Jonathan, can’t we do this at home? It’s late, and I’m sure you want to get back to Rowan.’ It was a cheap shot, but she wasn’t above taking advantage of her brother’s one soft spot. Not after the day that she’d just had. Jonathan’s face melted, until he caught himself and scowled, realising what she’d just done.

‘We need to do it now,’ he told her. ‘Because it’s about home. Adam’s moved down from Scotland to take up this position, and the hotel he booked has just called to cancel his reservation. I’ve invited him to stay at the house.’

Livia gaped at her brother. He couldn’t seriously be dropping this on her now, with no warning. ‘At the house? At my house, you mean.’ She knew that she sounded childish. And spoiled. And everything that she had wanted to prove to Adam that she was not.

‘I thought we were all okay with inviting people to stay in our homes,’ Jonathan said, with a show of wide-eyed innocence. Which would have been fair, if she’d been in a mood to acknowledge it, given that she’d been the one to invite Rowan on their trip to his house the year before, not able to face the thought of spending the week with her brothers without the back-up of her best friend.

She shouldn’t have been surprised, really, how spectacularly that had backfired. Now she couldn’t even depend on her best friend to always take her side. They tried their hardest to never mention the elephant in the room, because she couldn’t bear the thought that if it came down to it, Rowan would choose Jonathan over her.
