CHAPTER ELEVEN

Dread washed over him, but Locke kept his gaze on Alana. He wanted her reaction. He needed it. But it wasn’t surprise he got. Alana spun around, spun back and then said, “We should get out of here.”

“Don’t want to face your brother?”

“He’s going to arrest you!” Her eyes were wild. She reminded him of one of his sisters when they found out Mom had fallen while they were at the store. Wendy had taken him to spend some of his birthday money…until her phone rang. The fear and worry had manifested itself in a kind of manic state. He’d had to help her control it—even though he’d only been ten—until they reached the hospital to meet everyone. For whatever reason, God had created him as the kind of person who expressed less the greater the emotion, not more.

“Why are you just standing there? Let’s go!”

“I don’t like leaving a body.” It didn’t sit well with him.

“We can shut the front door.”

“No, we found it open. We’ll be able to tell Ray we left the place exactly as we found it.” He eased it back with his foot until it was slightly ajar and then they headed for the car. “Maybe it’s a blessing our phones aren’t working. That way no one can track us.”

Alana got hers out. “Yep. Still no signal. Is someone blocking them?”

“Could be. If it’s just us, they’d have to either be local and jamming them, or they could have had someone from the phone company with access to our lines hack us.” He shook his head. “We’re supposed to have devices that are extra secure.”

“Is it Brian Wells?”

“He’s a sniper, which makes me sure the restaurant shooting was him. Hacking phones is a whole different thing, not to mention changing the report that I emailed. I’d believe Daniel Kaiko could do this, but we’d have to access his service record to see what his particular skills are. Plus he’d have to know what extra safeguards the Secret Service uses. But he’s in police custody.”

“So there’s someone else involved, then? But they’ve killed the other two people on the list. Which leaves my sister, who wrote it.”

Locke grabbed her hand and squeezed it. He ignored the surprised look on her face and unlocked the car. He held the door for her, just because he wanted to. It was a routine part of their job, but not an action they performed for each other. Still, he took pleasure in the simplicity of doing it now, for Alana.

Locke drove a mile without thinking too much about where they were headed. They only needed to get out of the area where Zane Franks’s house was. He parked and tried his phone again, calling an agent on his team first. The man was with the president now, having been assigned as extra personnel for tonight’s event at the conference center. But there was no answer.

Locke tried William next, and while he waited for it to connect, he said to Alana, “Once I talk to someone, I’m sure the whole thing will be cleared up.
