CHAPTER THIRTEEN

I’m here. I’m not sure why yet, Lord, but it sure is beautiful!

The flight information told Yvonne it was fifteen hundred miles between Matrimony Valley and Wander Canyon, but as she stepped out of the truck Monday afternoon, Yvonne felt as if she’d traveled to a whole other world.

There was so much space. The Blue Ridge Mountains of her home state were impressive, but Colorado’s Rocky Mountains somehow opened up into unfathomable space here. She looked up at the impossibly clear sky…and almost toppled over.

“Whoa there,” Chaz said, grabbing her shoulder as the world spun a bit. “You’re eight thousand feet up. Bit of a shock to your system at first.” He handed her a second water bottle after insisting she down a first when they got off the plane. “You need to drink a lot at first.”

She tried not to think about what it felt like to collapse—even for a second or two—against his chest. Every time they touched—even if only for a moment—his solid steadiness called to her. There was something rare about it, a treasure buried under all the gruff exterior he showed the rest of the world. She’d come to find it comforting amid the continually shifting storm of Hank and Pauline. “Do you ever feel it? When you go away and come back?”

Chaz pulled in a deep breath of the crisp mountain air she seemed to feel tingle all around her. “Not really. I’m used to it. Just feels like…home, I suppose.”

She had to ask. “And what did the valley feel like?”

The twinkle in his eye delighted her. “I’d better not say.”

He did look at home here. The tension that drew his shoulders tight all the time in Matrimony Valley had already eased up a bit. His familiarity with the ranch was obvious, but so was the hint that he was looking at it with new eyes. Embittered eyes, perhaps.

What did it feel like to cast his gaze across the land and know it would never be his? If she really did decide to leave Matrimony Valley, selling the family house would be the hardest part. But to have someone yank it out from under her the way Hank had done to Chaz? Yvonne couldn’t fathom that kind of betrayal. The frosty distance between the two men had made the plane ride challenging. She wondered if half of Hank’s reason for inviting her was just to keep the peace.

Chaz walked to the truck’s bed and let down the tailgate. “Welcome home, Cecil. You’ll be running all over this place in no time.” Unlocking the door to Cecil’s crate, he easily scooped the large dog up in his arms and deposited him on the ground. “What do you think?”

Poor Cecil. He’d weathered the plane ride remarkably well. He hobbled around in energetic circles, barking and sniffing as if he wanted to race off in every direction. Then even he wobbled, making Yvonne crouch down to put her arms around the dog. “Still a little woozy from the flight, are you? You and me both.
