Foxâs two-seater Aston Martin Vantage, with its humming growl, attracted attention as they drove through Hatfield, Connecticut. Ruâs first impression of the town was that it was vibey, pretty and sophisticated, judging by the number of art galleries, artisanal delis and bakeries they passed. Affluent, too, she thought. Foxâs stupidly luxurious car was one of many sheâd seen since entering the townâs limits.
Fox stopped at a light. Ru followed his gaze to the left and noticed a willowy woman heading toward the coffee shop on the corner. Her red hair glinted with gold in the sunlight, oversize glasses covered her face, and her loose T-shirt and denim shorts couldnât hide her sleek, subtle curves.
She was stunning, Ru admitted. She couldnât blame Fox for looking.
Fox seemed to make a last-minute decision and turned right, pulling into the first open parking space he found. When she looked at him, he cut the engine and pushed his sunglasses up into his hair.
âI just saw an old friend walk into the coffee shop, and Iâd like to say hello,â he stated, unclipping his seat belt.
Okay, well, he probably didnât need her cramping his style while he renewed old acquaintances. âIâll stay here,â she told him, not wanting to be a third wheel.
Fox exited the vehicle and surprised her when he walked around the hood to open her door. âCome and meet my brotherâs ex-fiancée,â he told her. âI think youâll like her.â
Ru grabbed her oversize tote and slung the bag over her shoulder as she straightened her aqua-colored T-shirt. Her white capri pants were a little creased, but that couldnât be helped. Fox slammed her door shut and placed his hand low on her back and kept it there as they walked toward the coffee shop, its entrance covered by a rounded, bright purpleâandâwhiteâstriped portico. The main street was lovely, Ru decided, looking around. The shopkeepers seemed to be competing to see whose hanging baskets were the prettiest, who had the shiniest front door, the most attractive window display.
âWas she engaged to Jack?â Ru asked as he pulled open the door to the coffee shop and gestured her inside.
Fox allowed the door to close behind them and shook his head. âNo, Malcolm.â
Ru watched as the redhead looked up at him, flashed a smile and then tried to pull it back, as if she wasnât sure what reaction sheâd receive. To both Ru and the other womanâs surprise, Fox pulled the redhead into a gentle, cautious hug. His fondness for her couldnât be disputed but she didnât catch anything sexual in their embrace. She got the sense of a man greeting an old friend he hadnât spoken to for a long time.
Not wanting to intrude, Ru moved down the counter and ordered two iced coffees, Foxâs with an extra shot of espresso. She handed over some money, gave her name and turned when she felt Foxâs hand on her back.
âRu, meet Peyton. Peyton, this is Ru Osman.â
Ru shook Peytonâs hand, telling her she was happy to meet her.
