Higher Education in the Private Sector
Parallel to the expansion of state supported tertiary education institutions, there has been an upsurge of privately owned and independently operated schools affiliated with or franchised by recognised foreign universities that offer a variety of approved programmes. Most of these private institutions, which must be approved by the Tertiary Education Commission, discussed below, operate as local partners of overseas institutions with their modes of offerings being a mix of distance and personal tutoring. In 2011, sixty-four private sector tertiary education providers were in operation with distance learning accounting for 309 programmes.[55] Related issues dealing with private institutions are discussed in the next section.
