Rescue
Sarai and Abram stepped away from the group while Zed ate. From the determined look on his face, I knew he wanted to do something about it, something Sarai would not like.
It surprised me when she asked me to help her pack Abramâs things.
âYou will let him go rescue Lot?â I asked.
âI cannot stop him. He is a man,â Sarai said with an impatient snort. âAnd, as he reminds me, Jehovah has promised him safety. He will protect Abram and his men.â
Abram armed the young men he had trained to fight against wild animals with staves and swords. They organized into squads and fighting groups. He stayed up late with Zed, learning all he could about the kings and the giants. I heard their murmurings from my tent.
I wondered how Sarai could sleep while they talked. She probably did not. Knowing how she liked to be close to Abram, she would be sitting as near as she could, listening to their plans.
Early the next morning, I stayed with Sarai, Bara, and the other women, watching the young men follow Abram down the road toward Damascus. I wondered how many of these young men would return with Abram.
Eliezer, Baraâs son and Abramâs designated heir, stood tall beside his mother. Abram had given him the responsibility of caring for the people of Mamre and all the animals. Abram could not risk his heir and take him into battle.
The army marched down the trail and over the pass with swords glinting in the sun. As they disappeared, Eliezer called to the remaining herders and sent the animals off to the pasture.
With most of the men gone, the camp quieted until little boys found sticks and pretended to battle the giants and free the captured men.
They reminded me of the preening peacocks in Pharaohâs court. Silly little boys, like the boys of Egypt, playing at war. They would be men soon enough and follow a leader off to war. Why did men always believe they needed to battle?
The camp returned to its usual business as the animals grazed in the pastures and women spun and wove. Even so, there was an undercurrent of concern for the young men who traveled to fight with Abram. Sarai reminded us it would take time for Abram to catch up to the enemy horde before he could do anything to rescue Lot and his family.
I tried not to think of the many ways Zed had described giants killing the men and hoped none of our men would find death that way. I often joined Sarai in prayers for their safety.
After our men had been gone three weeks, men who had been captives began to straggle past our camp with stories of their release. It seemed impossible that Abram and three hundred eighteen men could have taken on the giants in those ways. I hoped Abram would share the stories with us when he returned.
Each time the men passed, women would ask about their men.
âNone of your men were killed,â the freed captives cried.
