She woke with difficulty, dragging herself out of a dark pit of sleep. Opening her eyes, she glanced at the curtains, just starting to brighten with the early dawn beyond. This was going to be a tough day. She’d need every inch of her determination and mental strength to get through it. This was going to be the day she changed her life and left Vaughn.

Fractured memories of nightmares lurked, dissolving as she eased into wakefulness.

But there was something that had flavored her dreams that didn’t disappear; the odd, metallic odor that she could clearly smell.

And the sheets felt wet. Cold, wet, and heavy.

With panic surging inside her, Stella threw back the covers and reached for the bedside lamp. As she snapped it on, her heart jumped into her throat.

Blood. There was cooled blood on the sheets, deep crimson stains that had oozed onto her nightshirt. Her left arm was smeared with it.

“No! What happened!”

In panic, she turned to Vaughn, a motionless weight on the bed by her side.

He lay face up. His mouth and eyes were half open. His chest and stomach were a raw, bloody mess.

From out of his chest jutted the hilt of a knife.
