Chapter Nineteen ~ Investigations

Santiago

A fter a productive day of writing, I closed my laptop and stretched my legs. It was hard to get myself into work mode this morning after Sofia left. I almost begged her to call in sick and stay with me. I refrained because I knew if we were going to make this work, we’d have to continue with our adult lives as usual. We couldn’t afford to get totally sucked into each other like a bunch of teenagers.

I smiled again as I thought of her face right before she left. She was smiling and her eyes sparkled as she kissed me goodbye. I got a sense of pride knowing that I put that smile there. I couldn’t wait to see her again. Not wanting to interrupt her at work, or intrude on her time with her kids, I resisted texting her. I was itching to peek out of my window and see if she was home yet. I knew that wasn’t likely, but my restless energy was driving me crazy. Instead, I went to the gym and worked off my nervous energy.

Two hours later, I was pulling into the parking lot of our building and saw her car there. My heart picked up its tempo as I realized she was finally home with her kids. As I crossed the threshold of my place, I was desperate to go check on her, but I stopped myself. Instead, I took a quick shower and then I finally gave into the urge to go out on the patio to watch over her place. I knew I was firmly in stalker territory, but I had this overwhelming urge to protect her. Her kind heart and small stature made her appear delicate and would make her an easy target. It was a farce, of course. I knew she was smarter than that, stronger, too. She carried an inner strength that had helped her stand on her own two feet, despite what life had thrown at her. It must’ve been hard for her to carry all that weight on her shoulders. I wanted to help her with that heavy load and ease the burden she was constantly carrying, but we weren’t there yet. My gut told me she was independent and preferred not asking for help or depending on people. I respected that. It’s what made her such a strong woman, but as a man who genuinely loved her, I couldn’t help but worry. Even though she wasn’t ready for my help, it wouldn’t stop me from monitoring her in the meantime and watching out for her.

As I took my seat on the patio, I took my first calm breath of the day. I had a glass of bourbon and one of my favorite books. If she didn’t make an appearance, I figured I’d read and relax with my drink on this lovely afternoon. It wasn’t often that you could sit outside for long stretches of time without the humidity, making you sweat like a pig.
