Chapter Seventeen

A Break, But Not from Life

"So?" George asked. "How has it gone so far?"

"To be honest, it’s not great," Alex admitted. "I’m trying to keep Chloe’s hopes up, but the truth is we don’t have a lot to present other than her testimony. I thought I had two character witnesses in Maria and Claudia, but they were never her friends. She didn’t have anyone else other than them, so I didn’t have anyone to take to the stand and tell everyone that she was a good person who wouldn’t hurt a fly. All the jury had heard so far was how she threatened to kill Matthew Sterling. And not only from one witness either. Multiple people recounted that."

"What do you think?" George asked.

"I believe her. When she’s spoken to me, she's been honest, but that doesn’t matter in court. The jury has been told she wants to kill Matthew Sterling, and she also had a motive: not getting a role in his latest movie. Or that she was in love with him and he was cheating on her with multiple women. Or she knew she couldn’t have him, so she didn’t want anyone else to have him. Or that he was just a total prick and probably deserved it because he is a horrible human being."

"Woah, woah, woah!" George stated, raising his hands in surrender. "What’s got you so riled up?"

Alex sighed and took a deep breath. "I want to help Chloe and Eloise, but I don’t want to have to save her again. Not that I don’t want to; I don’t mean that. It’s just… Eloise’s husband was abusive, and I got them out of there, and I thought that was it. The more I hear about the movies, the more I worry she just stepped out of the frying pan and into the fire. She was in an abusive relationship when her father was around, and I’m worried she replaced that with another one."

"You think Matthew Sterling was abusive?" George asked.

Alex knew that he was, but it wasn’t his story to tell. He didn’t know how this would play out until Chloe was up on the witness stand. He didn’t like putting her up there in her current state, but it had to be done.

"I think the whole industry was abusive. I think her friends were abusive. She would have been a lot better off if she had gone into a completely different career."

"You got that right," George said.

"What if she breaks?" Alex asked. "I'm asking her to take to the witness stand, and that is a lot. It’s one thing to be up there as a witness, but another completely to be called as the defendant in a murder trial. I can control her when she is answering my questions, but not when Melissa is grilling her."

"You’re worried she’s going to have another outburst in court," George stated.

"I am, but that’s not it. If she does have another outburst, it will be justified, and the judge might punish us for that, but we can deal with it.
