When Lukas shouts that there’s a bomb, my world is knocked off its axis. I received this call from the tip line and suggested we come here. I ran the intel sweep and gave the team the okay to proceed. And now I’m hovering in the skies above as the barn erupts into a giant explosion of wood and flames.

It’s more than just our men getting ambushed that bothers me. Lukas is in that explosion.

My wrist vibrates and I read the incoming message.

The castle is under attack.

Screw my life.

My duty is to Creed and Keyla first, Honor second, and everyone else after that.

“I think I’m in trouble, boys. Man down.” Even over the broken crackle of the comms line, I hear how wrong Lukas’s voice sounds.

I have my orders and they aren’t to engage with the burning building. Strangely enough, in my moment of panic, it’s Dune’s voice I hear clearest in my mind. “There’s more to life than duty, Frosty. Sometimes you gotta go with your gut.”

I scan the ground below and spot two dozen enemy troops flooding into the barnyard.

This is one of those times.

I have a duty to the success of the operation, but I have a duty to Lukas too. I also have a duty to Honor and our union. It’s not as simple as the textbooks and teachings make it seem. Reality is messy.

With a curse, I dive toward the flames and brace for the searing heat. The barn is old, and the wood is dry. It’s going up like a tinderbox and the wave of the inferno is incredible.

I take a deep breath before I’m consumed by the rising flames. The smoke hits my eyes and stings, but there’s nothing to be done about that. I need to find Lukas and, in this burning hell, that is a challenge.

“Lukas! Lukas, where are you?”

No sound comes back to me or maybe it does and I don’t hear it over the crackling of wood and the snapping of beams above me.

This whole place is about to come down.

The incoming troops don’t seem to be advancing into the barn, so I assume they were moving in to capture the members of the team who were dazed by the explosion. I can’t worry about that right now.

In this moment, my only concern is Lukas.

Flexing my back, I bring my wings up to shield myself from the heat as I search. It takes a moment for my eyes to adjust to the brilliance of the flames, but I’m starting to make out my surroundings.

A loud crack sounds above me.

One of the support beams is burning through and is about to snap. When that happens, the roof will cave in and we’ll both be buried and burned alive.

I need to find him and get out.

I know what door Lukas and his team entered and I make my way to that side of the barn.

I see a man lying face down in the dirt and I rush forward. Black fatigues, muscled physique, military cut black hair…

I drop to my knees to assess—dead.
