LEE

As I paced its length, the cabin felt smaller than ever, and the phone pressed against my ear. Raymond was on the other end, giving me feedback on the new drilling site they had finally found.

I gave him my approval to start work. I was glad I could please the shareholders. I did it while keeping the environment and local community unharmed.

"Alright, Mr. Andrews. I'll update the team tomorrow."

"Yes, Raymond. And please don't call me anymore. Let me enjoy my vacation, for Christ's sake."

The call ended, but the silence that followed was anything but peaceful. The cruise was ending soon, and I knew I would miss Ella.

I could invite her to my home, but I knew she wouldn't travel after this cruise until her mom recovered.

I mused on my relationship with Ella and Raymond's long call. Would Ella understand this side of me? The driven, work-obsessed man who couldn't let go, even in the middle of the ocean?

I went to her room, my footsteps echoing in the quiet corridor. I was about to knock when the door swung open, and there she stood.

"Lee," she said, her voice emotionless. I at once brushed off the thought.

"I thought we could spend some time together if you weren't sleeping yet," I said.

Ella hesitated, her gaze shifting. "I'm actually in the middle of something. Possibly later?"

Her response struck me like an icy wave. This wasn't like Ella; she always took the time to share a moment… always.

"Oh, sure," I replied emotionlessly, trying to mask my disappointment. "Never mind. Sorry to disturb you," I thought.

A sinking feeling took hold as I turned away: she'd been avoiding me all day. With each step back to my cabin, the weight of this revelation grew heavier. But it made sense: now, her abrupt departure, the lack of conversation between us. I had assumed she'd kept busy with Robin, but I was wrong.

I didn't realize immediately when her friendly warmth gave way to courteous detachment.

Once inside my cabin, I slumped into a chair, the day's events replaying in my mind. I tried to remember when I offended her, but nothing came up.

I lay back on the bed, staring at the ceiling. The more I thought about it, the more I realized how I loved her presence. She had become a part of my daily routine, a source of happiness amidst the chaos of my life.

I tried to rationalize her behavior. Was she busy? Or did she need space? But the nagging doubt lingered, fed by her indifferent tone and abrupt dismissal.

Hours passed, and I finally drifted off to sleep.

By morning, determined to seek answers, I went to the breakfast buffet, hoping to find Ella there. The air was full of the clatter of plates and the hum of conversations. But she and Robin were nowhere to be seen.

I soon learned from James that they had both asked for their breakfast delivered to Robin's room.

Later in the afternoon, as I meandered around the ship, I saw her. She was standing at the rail, gazing out at the sea.
