In the 18th and 19th centuries, U.S. military and paramilitary troops, as well as settlers and farmers, perpetrated hundreds of genocidal massacres or cruel removals all over the U.S., starting in the East, with many of the worst atrocities occurring in the West. Yet even today the extent of these crimes is not widely known. David Bolin comments that “the best interests of the American philosophy of education would not be served if third-graders were taught that during the 19th century” the Euro-American “farmer was perhaps the most ruthless and relentless exterminator of the Indians, or that American frontiersmen, cowboys, and soldiers often excelled in the use of barbaric torture, brutality, and slaughter in their encounters with Indians.”22
