Norbert Weiland anticipated family members would visit Southern California from his native Chicago. To ensure they had a place to stay, he built what he called the Balboa Court Apartments at 10715–10727 Balboa Boulevard. No doubt the Weiland’s Chicago relatives would have had second thoughts about moving to Granada Hills if they had arrived on January 9, 1949, when Southern California experienced a rare snowfall that lasted for three days. Here John Orcutt’s deodars along White Oak Avenue look more like a Currier and Ives Christmas card then the entrance to a ranch named Sunshine. (Courtesy Robert Bates.)
