Chapter 11

Before I could act, the intruder dropped the folder and started to run.

He rushed past me so quickly that I was knocked into the doorframe, and when I tried to grab for him, he was already out of reach. Then the man turned his head slightly, and I managed to catch a glimpse of a young, pointed face and a mop of curly brown hair that was eerily similar to mine, until he took off again.

His heavy work boots pounded on the carpet, but he moved as quickly as if he were wearing sneakers, and I pushed harder, eager to catch up so I could find out who had sent him and why.

I hurdled over the chairs he’d thrown aside, and although I cleared them easily enough, I was focused only on how close the intruder was to escaping. He was nearly at the elevators, and through gritted teeth, I realized the one I’d used was still waiting on the top floor.

I was closing in on him, and I watched as he jammed the call button over and over again without looking over his shoulder. It seemed the intruder had realized his earlier mistake, and he was determined to keep his identity a secret if he could.

“Stop!” I shouted as he ran into the elevator, but he paid no attention.

I ran faster, determined to slip between the closing doors if I had to, but they were already starting to shut. Adrenaline urged me on, and as my injured body cried out for rest, I got to the elevator just as the doors shut with a quiet thud and began the quick descent to the ground floor.

I whirled around to throw myself in the second elevator, but my heart sank when I saw somebody on the ground floor had called it and it was on the way down. I thought quickly, and then kicked open the door to the stairwell that nobody ever used except during fire drills.

I sped through the heavy fire doors before it could slam shut and into the slightly musty stairwell that no associate or partner ever had the energy to climb. I paid no attention to the mold seeping across the walls like a puddle or even that my tender ribs seemed about ready to break. There was only one thing that I could focus on, and that was the desperate, urgent need to get to the intruder before he made his escape.

I fumbled for my cell and rang the direct line to security while I bounded down the stairs as fast as I dared.

“Sebastian!” I shouted when a disgruntled Spanish man answered. “It’s Jimmy--”

“Mr. Kelly?” he asked with alarm. “What’s the matter?”

“There’s a guy in the elevators on the way to the ground floor,” I said. “He’s… he’s dressed in a plumbing uniform, navy overalls, and big boots, but grab anyone coming out of the elevators because he might have changed clothes on the way down.”

Sebastian listened to my frantic breaths, and as though he’d experienced this a hundred times before, he grew eerily calm.
