Chapter Twelve,

in Which Rules Are Made (to Be Broken?) for Nat

“We need to have rules.”

I cock my head over my vanilla mocha and give Adam a Look. “What kind of rules?”

After spending Friday night together, we spent the rest of the weekend doing our own things—for me, that meant shopping with my mom, chatting with Camila for an hour, tanning in the backyard, checking in with my dad, drawing fan art for a new dark fantasy series, and hitting up a Pride movie night with Jaime at Cinespia. But now it’s Monday morning and we’re meeting at Mocha Rouge for what I thought was a cute pre-work coffee date but apparently is actually a strategy session.

“The kind of rules that prevent the entire company from knowing the more disposable intern is dating the boss’s daughter intern,” he says wryly, clutching his tall green tea.

I flutter my lashes. “So we’re dating now?”

“Oh, shut up,” he mutters, his face reddening as he glances at the counter, I guess to make sure Jaime’s not listening.

“I mean, I don’t know if taking me back to your place counts as a date,” I continue, because obviously I’m going to continue, and I don’t really care whether Jaime hears me or not. “Especially since it was really your brother’s idea. I think that for us to be dating, you need to take me on an actual date.”

“Oh, I do, do I. Why don’t you take me on a date?”

“You’re the one who said we’re dating. Besides, I had you at my house and drove you home afterward. That kind of counts as me taking you on a date.”

“I cooked for you,” he points out. “That should count as me taking you on a date.”

“Yeah? You cooked for my mom. Were you taking her on a date?”

Adam cocks his head, looking a little bit like he wants to dump his green tea into my lap. “I need to take you on a date.”

“That’s what I’m saying.”

“Okay, let me think about this.”

“Stop when it starts to hurt.” I take a sip of my drink, which is delicious; Evan may make a mean taco, but Jaime is killing it as my favorite barista in LA. “You know, you could’ve just paid for this. Then you could’ve called this a date.”

“What part of my sleeping on my brother’s couch and working a minimum wage internship suggests to you that I have fancy coffee money, Fox?”

“Fair point. But good news—I’m a cheap date. Please, just get me to the beach. I can’t believe I’ve been here for an entire week and I still haven’t been to the beach.”

His dark eyes widen. “Oh wow, that’s criminal. But you’re in luck. There’s a food truck night at Marina del Rey every Thursday night, and I’ll be working Bros over Tacos this week. I know it’s not the most romantic of dates, but—”

“It gets me to the beach and comes with free tacos? I’m in.”

“Hey, I didn’t say anything about free—”

“Shh.” I put a finger over his lips.
